Transport for London: killing London’s children

Residents demanded action to reduce speeding after a five-year-old boy was knocked down and killed by a lorry yards from his school. Scotland Yard said they believe the child was with his mother walking along St George’s Road in Elephant and Castle, south-east London, when he was in collision with the flat-bed truck at 3.45pm.

Residents complained of motorists regularly flouting the 30mph speed limit on the stretch of the road, part of a one-way system amid three schools. Laila Khory, who lives close to the crossing, said she had previously complained to Southwark Council and Transport for London about the problem. She said: “The cars just go so fast up and down this road - when they get a green outside Elephant and Castle they absolutely race down. It’s just not appropriate - this area is all schools.
